The game of Video Poker begins when the bettor inserts credits (either tokens, credit slips or cash) into the machine and presses the draw button. A 5 card hand will be "given out" on the screen.

The Electronic Poker machine also has hold buttons, and enthusiasts should now decide which cards to keep and which to discard. After the bettor has selected which cards she would like to keep, the player will then press ‘draw’, which will mean that any new cards will be dealt if desired. The game is now completed, with the Electronic Poker machine scanning the hand to see if it is the same as any of the winning hands printed on the payment schedule.

Normally, the minimum succeeding hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the award money increasing for each better hand. A list of common winning hands starts with jacks or better, and moves on to 2 pairs, three of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, four of a kinds, straight flushes and finally royal flushes. It should be known that the pay out schedule can change from game to game, so that skillful players are able to select the most money-making machine each time.

As soon as the first round has completed, the player can either choose to continue on in an attempt to maximize their earnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to cash out any credits that have been won. Additionally, several versions of the game give the enthusiast an opportunity to double their wins, in which case a further game is played. There are also differences among individual games, with some decks of cards having wild cards and other varying characteristics to increase playability.
